How Often Can You Use a UV Lamp For Gel Nails?

When used properly, UV lamp is a great disinfection method in addition to being energy efficient and effective for curing and coating applications.uv lamp In fact, it’s one of the most popular curing methods for a wide range of products. However, many people are concerned about the impact of UV radiation on their health and are unsure of how much exposure is safe. To answer these questions and more, we spoke with dermatologist Shari Marchbein and Amy Ling Lin, founder of Sundays, a New York City-based nail salon chain. They shared tips on how often you can use a UV lamp for gel nails, the long-term effects of UV exposure and what to look out for.

Almost any product that requires an ultraviolet (UV) light to cure or perform its function can benefit from the use of UV lamps.uv lamp The lights are commonly used in curing and coating systems, sterilisation processes to kill bacteria, air disinfection, disinfectant wipes and even in tanning beds.

UV radiation is emitted from the sun and is separated into three categories of UVA, UVB and UVC based on their nanometer or wavelength.uv lamp While the sun provides a rich source of UV energy, it is not easily harnessed in a way that can be applied to everyday life. UV lamp emit a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB with the ability to adjust their output to match the specific requirements of various applications.

The basic technology behind UV lamps is that they generate a plasma arc inside the bulb using an inert gas such as argon and mercury.uv lamp A high voltage is provided to the electrodes which ionizes the starting gas and triggers a chemical reaction that creates the plasma arc and emits UV light. The ballast then supplies a lower voltage/amperage to keep the mercury/gas ionized and emitting a steady stream of UV.

Most of the commercially available UVC lamps are designed to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 but do not have sufficient energy for continuous use in a public environment.uv lamp Additionally, these lamps are not suitable for use in elevators because they produce ozone which can irritate the respiratory tract.

UVB lamps are often used in home tanners to help produce vitamin D3 in the skin, which is beneficial for individuals with cystic fibrosis and short bowel syndrome (SBS).uv lamp A study of 8 weeks of daily use by CF patients showed that circulating 25(OH)D levels increased by 25%, suggesting that far-UVC radiation could also be useful to correct vitamin D deficiencies due to fat malabsorption in CF and SBS. However, further research is required to evaluate the effectiveness and long-term outcomes of this approach.
